The Mechanical Engineer I is part of the airport baggage handling systems engineering team and reports to the Engineering Department Manager. This position works under the direction of the Lead Mechanical Engineer and/or Project Engineer. The Mechanical Engineer I will develop final layout designs, design power transmission equipment, order equipment, prepare mechanical commissioning plans, and participate in project commissioning. This role involves system design (partial and complete), drafting work independently and collaboratively, and coordinating activities related to manufacturing, operation, application, installation, and repair of these systems. The engineer ensures project deliverables meet specified requirements while staying on schedule and within budget.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

  • Design and develop mechanical conveyor systems for airport baggage handling projects in 2D and 3D environments, including validation.
  • Create detailed fabrication drawings, including validation.
  • Prepare specifications, drawings, and process descriptions for manufacturing and subcontracting.
  • Design and select conveyors and power transmission equipment.
  • Participate in design review meetings.
  • Develop mechanical installation phasing plans.
  • Order mechanical equipment at the engineering level and interface with purchasing and suppliers.
  • Participate in testing, installation, and commissioning efforts, both from the office and on-site.
  • Conduct site visits to validate mechanical installation quality and compliance.
  • Contribute to equipment development and improvement.
  • Support the sales department with proposals and customer requests to develop customized solutions.
  • Survey existing installations for future projects and develop solutions to avoid mechanical conflicts.
  • Meet deadlines to ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget.
  • Contribute to team efforts as needed to achieve desired results.

Basic Knowledge Requirements

  • Engineering and Technology – Practical knowledge of engineering sciences and technologies, including principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment used in design and production.
  • Production and Processing – Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, cost management, and techniques for efficient manufacturing and distribution.
  • French and English Language – Understanding of the structure and content of both languages, including meaning, spelling, composition rules, and grammar.

  • Critical Thinking – Use logic and reasoning to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.

Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or relevant technical diploma, or a combination of relevant professional experience in industrial automation or material handling system design.
  • Experience with AutoCAD in 2D and 3D.
  • Proficiency in French and English required.
  • Must be a member of the OIQ (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec).
  • Experience with Inventor and Revit preferred.
  • Experience with material handling systems preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Requirements

  • Remain stationary 50% of the time; move around the office to access files and equipment; operate a computer and other productivity machines; inspect documents; communicate verbally; read and evaluate forms and correspondence.
  • Ability to maneuver through industrial conveyor systems, including climbing access ladders, crossing walkways, and lifting/carrying items up to 40 lbs.
